One musical instrument?

August 17, 2004

Fuz asks if you could suddenly learn one musical instrument what would it be?

I said bagpipes! because that was what jumped out of my mouth when I read the question. Why? I guess that bagpipes are cool - whenever a band is playing and the pipes kick in, everyone cheers. It was the instant answer, and the instant answer is usually a good guide to what you really want.

As a practical matter, if I wanted to have skill on an instrument so that I could play tunes for myself, I would probably call for flatpicked acoustic guitar. I have a guitar down in the music closet, and I used to bash around on it, but I never got past basic chording. I also have a hammered dulcimer and a bodran in there. None of them get played - time and energy.

The toddler has his own answer: "dhum! dhum!". We are doing something a little scary, and buying him a drum for his 2nd birthday. We may regret this decision.

What would you pick? I think this is a great meme.

Clarinet. Absolutely.

The University of Washington has a great band. The band is the reason I like going to the football games. They are amazing... and they look like they're having So Much Fun!

I commented one day that I wished I played an instrument, so I could've been in the UW Band. They asked me: "Which Instrument?" Clarinet was my insta-answer.

I just love the Clarinet, and it has the added benefit of being easily totable around campus.

I played clarinet briefly in grammar school. Didn't really care for it.

I'd probably pick acoustic guitar myself.

As for bagpipes...old quote, author forgotten: "A gentleman is a man who knows how to play the bagpipes, but doesn't." Or my preferred "the Irish invented the bagpipes and gave them to the Scots. The Scots still haven't gotten the joke." :-)

J paused and agonized between harp and voice, both things she knows a bit and would like to know better.

Her first answer was harp; her considered answer was voice; if given a choice between knowing only one instrument well or keeping her current partial knowledge of several instruments, she would rather know lots of little things than one big things.

And here I had her pegged as a hedgehog, not a fox.
